| Battleship of the first class. Launched at San Francisco, California,
October 26, 1893; length 351 feet 2 inches, breadth 69 feet 3 inches; draught
24 feet; displacement 11,688 tons; speed 16.79 knots; 45 guns and 3 torpedo
tubes; 35 officers and 580 men. This magnificent ship and her gallant commander,
Capt. Charles E. Clark, achieved undying fame by the remarkable run of 14,706
knots made in 60 days, including stops for coal, from the Pacific Coast to
Cuban waters, during the Spanish war, where they participated in the destruction
of Admiral Cervera's fleet in the Battle of Santiago. |
