August twenty-ninth, nineteen hundred and sixteen, the construction of the
following vessels shall be bugun as soon as practicable at a cost exclusive
of armor and armament not to exceed the following amounth" Three battleships,
$15,000,000 each;.

| Authorized 4 March 1917, Montana (BB-51) was laid down
1 September 1920; but construction of the South Dakota class battleship
by Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, California, was canceled 8 February 1922
by the Washington Treaty on the limitation of naval armament. Montana
was struck from the Navy list 24 August 1923 and sold 25 October 1923 to
be scrapped. |
