| On 21 January 1972 the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock
Co., Newport News, Virginia, was awarded the contract to build the USS
Mississippi (CGN-40); her keel was laid 22 February 1975; she was
launched 31 July 1976; Delivered 14 July 1978 and commissioned 5 August
1978. |
| On 28 July 1997 Mississippi was stricken from the Naval
Vessel Register and is currently berthed at the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance
Facility (NISMF), Bremerton, Washington, awaiting disposal by
recycling. |
