USS Mississippi, Guided Missile Cruiser (CGN-40) History
On 21 January 1972 the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Newport News, Virginia, was awarded the contract to build the USS Mississippi (CGN-40); her keel was laid 22 February 1975; she was launched 31 July 1976; Delivered 14 July 1978 and commissioned 5 August 1978.
On 28 July 1997 Mississippi was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register and is currently berthed at the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility (NISMF), Bremerton, Washington, awaiting disposal by recycling.
