USS Kansas in the Tagus River
click here for larger imageLuís Miguel Bonifácio sends these images and though he doesn't know the exact date when the photos were taken (perhaps July of 1921) he has deduced that his grandfather was on a ferry crossing the Tagus River from Lisbon to Almada (which still is in use today) using to the position of Ajuda Royal Palace, which is the building visible on the left side of the Kansas over the rear. His Grandfather was Rogério Pinto de Lemos Pereira, and although his father was a merchant navy commander, he was an army officer (Infantry) and was severely wounded in France at the Battle of Armentiéres (9th of April 1917 - Start of the last German Offensive). This photo of his Grandfather was taken at Lisbon in the hospital gardens (1921) where he was still recovering from the wounds to his legs which, fortunately the doctors manage to save. He was Born in 1895 and died in 1974.
