Perspective
In our world of high speed communications and travel, it may be difficult to understand the significance of a "world cruise." Remember that things were very different 100 years ago! As you read the following, try to place this journey in perspective with life as it was in the beginning of the 20th Century.
1900
Congress formally makes Hawaii a territory of the United States.
The United States is a fledgling world power with a navy fourth in fighting strength and a standing army ranked ninth.
John Luther "Casey" Jones becomes immortal by dying at the throttle of the Cannonball Express.

1901
President McKinley is assassinated at the Pan-American Exposition, in Buffalo, New York.
Guglielmo Marconi successfully receives the first long-distance radio transmission.
After almost 64 years as the British monarch, Queen Victoria dies.

1902
The first box of Crayola Crayons is sold.
The Teddy bear debuts when President "Teddy" Roosevelt declines to shoot a subdued bear on a hunting expedition.
The Pepsi-Cola Company is formed.

1903
The Wright Brothers make their historic first flight at Kitty Hawk.
Ford Motor Company is formed.
The first Harley-Davidson is manufactured.

1904
Long Acre Square is renamed Times Square when the New York Times moves to Broadway and 42and Street.
The Russo-Japanese War Begins when Japanese forces attack the Russian controlled city of Port Arthur in southern Manchuria.
The first section of the New York City's subway is opened

1905
Mata Hari Debuts is Paris.
Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity is published leading to the famous equation: E=mc2.
After the devastating defeat of the Russian Baltic Fleet, President Roosevelt brokers peace between Russia and Japan.
 

1906
San Francisco is all but destroyed by a tremendous earthquake and fire.
The H.M.S. Dreadnought, a battleship whose ten twelve-inch guns immediately render all other warships obsolete, is launched.
The first Victrola is sold.

1907
The Passenger Liner Lusitania successfully completes her maiden voyage to New York.
Oklahoma becomes the 46th State.
The American Atlantic Fleet (or Great White Fleet) begins the journey to California.

1908
Henry Ford introduces the  Model T vowing, "I will build a car for the great multitude."
The American Fleet provides humanitarian assistance to victims in Messina, Italy, after the most devastating earthquake ever recorded in Europe which killed some 85,000 people.
General Motors is formed.

1909
Five weeks after the Great White Fleet makes it's triumphant return to Hampton Roads, the first keel plates of the H.M.S. Titanic are laid. Her infamous maiden voyage will take place in three years.
The Panama Canal will be completed in five years.
In eight years the United States will enter the First World War  ... the beginning of hostilities in Europe is still five years in the future.
